I found a place online that you can use to check the total shutter count on a Nikon camera, MyShutterCount.com.  Alternatively, you can also use Opanda EXIF reader to do the samething locally on your computer.  I’m not 100% sure if Canon has the information in their EXIF data but let me know if you find out.  I don’t have a Canon to test.
